Our youth programs are using innovative new ways to address the terrible statistics as it applies to youth in Omaha and Sarpy county.

The study entitled "Celebrating the Past, Charting the Future: Omaha's African American Community" done by the Pew Partnership for Civic Change vividly states the great challenges we face and the need for new innovative programs that address youth reality in the 21st century

Under the Family Development Services dept, of ENCAP our youth programs are beginning to address these inequalities and include:

ENCAP’s Youth department will work with an existing project with Omaha Public Schools (OPS) in which ENCAP provides a five day, 15 hour program to OPS students who are suspended because of drug and/or alcohol use on school campuses.  The “Back on Track” curriculum addresses the negative effects of drugs/alcohol, the consequences involved with usage, and development of substance abuse prevention skills.  Facilitators are licensed mental health therapists and certified alcohol drug counselors. In working with the OPS at risk population, a need was identified to address the free/unstructured time Back on Track participants experienced when the class ends at noon on each of the five school days.  To meet the challenge, an additional youth specialist will be hired to engage the youth in on-site AA support meetings, homework assistance with missed assignments, and computer lab access for the remainder of the day.

Youth Poverty in Omaha
The study entitled "Celebrating the Past, Charting the Future: Omaha's African American Community" by done by the Pew Partnership for Civic Change. According to the report, while Omaha rates high on factors that
determine quality of life, 30% of African American families live in poverty, compared to 10% of white families. 40% of black children live in poverty, which the study's author, Suzanne Morse, writes, "Poverty among African American children in Omaha was evident in school performance from the early grades to disproportionate high school dropout rates. Broadly put, African American children are too often behind before they start school and never catch up. "

Our program focuses on four core areas:

1. Academics, which include enrichment activities and life skills training.

2. Health & Nutrition, which include physical fitness activities and nutritional education.

3. Arts, which include fine, performing, digital, and new-media e.g.,. film, web development, audio etc.

4. Community Bridging, which include outreach to gangs, law enforcement and area schools.
